expatriot votes

Ok, Americans...
How do you feel about expatriots voting? I am one, but I have yet to go through all the paperwork that will allow me to vote. I'm not sure it's worth it, especially since I'm not really American, and as you can see, have a lot to learn about Americans. However, it is my right, and rights are a big deal. So... what do you think? Should I vote?

Chris and I talked a lot about this because it is an interesting thought. After much discussion we felt pretty unsettled about the idea if you were never planning to live in the U.S. or had family living in the U.S. However, it is, as you say, your right, so if you (or anyone) wanted to vote it would really be your own decision. Thank you for spurring such an interesting conversation:)

Well I'm not sure that we won't ever move to the States. Right now it's not an option because I couldn't get health insurance. However if that changes, then perhaps we may find ourselves at MIT someday for Josh's masters or in Seattle(not soon, but maybe someday).

Then I think you should have a say in who is in charge, but that's just me and its really beside the point now:)

I don't know though. Because any one else coming to live in the US wouldn't have that option. I don't know that simply being born there is enough. Although I'm likely doing a whole lot more research into different ideas than other people who only lived there until they were 2 months old! :)
Perhaps if I ever become so wealthy that I actually have to pay taxes then I'll also vote! (There is an $80,000 living allowance on top of host country taxes and US deductions if you live and earn outside the country, so I'd really have to be pulling it in to offset that!)

It depends on who you vote for. ;)

:) Well then, you probably don't want me voting! Although I might help to split the left! :)
